SUBLIMINAL PROJECTS & BRITWEEK present

MATTHEW STONE: Ecstasy

Exhibition closes June 1, 2013

In conjunction with Britweek, SUBLIMINAL PROJECTS is proud to present an exhibition of new work by British artist Matthew Stone. Matthew Stone describes himself as an artist and shaman, existing as a photographer, sculptor, performance artist, curator, writer, optimist and cultural provocateur.

Ecstasy will be Stone’s first solo show in Los Angeles. It will feature new works as well as selections from his Love Focused Like a Laser series (2012) and his Optimism As Cultural Rebellion series (2011). Stone’s black and white photographs capture the sequential movement of bodies using long exposure shots and laser lights, poetically recording elements of the figure, motion, interaction, and performance. His wood works combine color photographs of entangled limbs and twirling bodies with draped fabrics and cloud-strewn skies. The imagery is imprinted on beech or oak veneered MDF, lending an organic texture to the vivid overlap of materials and figures.

Stone (b. 1982) graduated from Camberwell College of Arts, London in 2004 and has since had solo and group exhibitions around the world. His laser photography was debuted this summer by V1 Gallery in Copenhagen and presented as part of the House of the Nobleman exhibition at Neo Bankside during the 2012 Frieze Art Fair. He has presented solo exhibitions at Union Gallery in London, Asia Song Society in New York City, and been included in the 2011 Marrakech Biennal, The Royal Academy, The Baltic Center, Tate Britain and ICA London. Stone is represented by The Hole, NYC and by Union Gallery, London.

Generous support for the exhibition has been provided by Britweek, Art Patron Tamie Adaya, US Beverages, and Chaucer Logistics. Further information on Britweek events can be found at www.britweek.org.
