I originally made the Star Icon in January 1996 as I was transitioning into a period of my work inspired by Russian Constuctivist Propaganda posters. I had made a simplified illustration of the Giant face I called the Icon and i decided I wanted to make a star iteration. I cut a star shaped window out and played with cropping until I was happy. The print below was the first print I made using the star image. I only made an edition of 90 of them and probably only sold a small percentage of the 90. The rest went up on the street or were damaged. The Obey Star has been a crucial element in my work ever since so I decided to make a letterpress variation on the 1996 O.G. Obey Star. I’m very happy with how it turned out.

I was first made aware of the West Memphis Three murder case through Henry Rollins’ Rise Above fundraiser CD. I knew wrongful conviction of three teenage boys who wore black was a cause worth learning more about because Rollins is always on the side of due diligence and justice. When I watched the Paradise Lost documentary I was convinced that Damien Echols and his co-defendants were innocent. I donated art to a fundraiser designed to fund DNA tests that could prove their innocence (or confirm their guilt). The evidence in the case had been mishandled and the West Memphis police were reluctant to cooperate and denied the case had been mishandled. DNA evidence finally exonerated the West Memphis Three after 18 years in prison. I can’t imagine losing 18 years in jail for a false conviction, but the West Memphis Three might still be in prison if it were not for the consistent pressure by diligent truth seekers like Henry Rollins and many others. I was incredibly honored to be able to help design the cover for Damien Echols’ book “Life After Death” along with my co-worker Casey Ryder. Check out the book to hear the compelling story from Damien Echols’ perspective.

America is a land of diversity with a rich history of embracing immigration. Almost any American can trace their family roots to immigrants. Often our ancestors migrated to escape prejudices in their homeland and to find a better life. Current immigration laws do not reflect our shared values, nor do they reflect the realities of our modern world. They all too often separate parents from their children and criminalize those seeking a better way of life. We call upon Congress to put forth an Immigration Reform Bill that leaves no one out and provides a roadmap to citizenship for all 11 million undocumented immigrants. Let’s live up to our highest ideals of democracy and freedom. Check out my friend Favianna Rodriguez’s Migration is Beautiful image and please share.
Over 100 artists have signed a statement of solidarity to urge President Obama, Congress and other policy-makers to pass immigration reform that must acknowledge the complexity and truth of the American immigrant story, which is one of hope, dignity, family, and faith in democracy. -Faviana

SUBLIMINAL PROJECTS & BRITWEEK present

MATTHEW STONE: Ecstasy

Opening Reception: Saturday, May 4 , 8 – 11 PM

Exhibition Dates: May 4 – June 1, 2013

In conjunction with Britweek, SUBLIMINAL PROJECTS is proud to present an exhibition of new work by British artist Matthew Stone. Matthew Stone describes himself as an artist and shaman, existing as a photographer, sculptor, performance artist, curator, writer, optimist and cultural provocateur.

Ecstasy will be Stone’s first solo show in Los Angeles. It will feature new works as well as selections from his Love Focused Like a Laser series (2012) and his Optimism As Cultural Rebellion series (2011). Stone’s black and white photographs capture the sequential movement of bodies using long exposure shots and laser lights, poetically recording elements of the figure, motion, interaction, and performance. His wood works combine color photographs of entangled limbs and twirling bodies with draped fabrics and cloud-strewn skies. The imagery is imprinted on beech or oak veneered MDF, lending an organic texture to the vivid overlap of materials and figures.

Stone (b. 1982) graduated from Camberwell College of Arts, London in 2004 and has since had solo and group exhibitions around the world. His laser photography was debuted this summer by V1 Gallery in Copenhagen and presented as part of the House of the Nobleman exhibition at Neo Bankside during the 2012 Frieze Art Fair. He has presented solo exhibitions at Union Gallery in London, Asia Song Society in New York City, and been included in the 2011 Marrakech Biennal, The Royal Academy, The Baltic Center, Tate Britain and ICA London. Stone is represented by The Hole, NYC and by Union Gallery, London.

My friend Jason Filipow sent me this piece on Malcolm McLaren. Malcolm managed the Sex Pistols and was married to Vivienne Westwood(who my daughter Vivienne is named after). The Sex Pistols were life changing for me musically, visually, and philosophically. Malcolm was a very important part of their media manipulation strategy and antagonistic stance. Malcolm also was a pioneer in hip hop with his Buffalo Gals track. Keith Haring did part of the art. I was able to hang out with Malcolm a couple times and he was brilliant. It was hard to get a word in, but it was a pleasure to just listen to him. This is a piece from the BBC that is very worth watching.

Award-winning documentary director Ondi Timoner, whose films include the Sundance champs “DIG!” and “We Live in Public,” is launching her first crowd-funding campaign to finance an extension of her A Total Disruption website, which chronicles innovators and entrepreneurs in the tech world

“You can’t just be an artist now,” Timoner told TheWrap this week. “You have to be an artist-entrepreneur, and we want to set up a resource to show content creators how it can be done.”

For the website, Timoner has produced more than 50 episodes dealing with innovators including Reddit’s Steve Huffman and Alexis Ohanian, BitTorrent’s Bram Cohen, LinkedIn’s Reid Hoffman, Instagram’s Kevin Systrom and musician Amanda Palmer, who will be the subject of a new series of episodes.

“We want to answer some basic questions,” said Timoner. “How do you finance and distribute films and music and artwork? How do you collaborate? How do you use technology to directly connect with your fan base?”

Part of the reason for launching the website, she said, is because technology and culture move too fast for her to spend a long time doing interviews and collecting material, and then make a feature documentary about the subject.

“I can wait years and do a big movie, or I can film it and release it as I’m going,” she said.

The Kickstarter campaign which has a goal of $96,000, will help her finish episodes that have already been shot, as well as film new episodes chronicling innovators and entrenpreneurs in the tech world and the intersection of technology, art and entertainment.

The campaign will also fund putting Timoner’s entire archive of 300 interviews online, in a searchable database and archive that can be used by content creators and others looking to explore the opportunities made possible by new technology. – Steve Pond of The Wrap

U.S. drone policy has been a contentious topic over the last few years. Many people seem to be afraid to speak against drones for fear of being seen as “soft on terror”. I first accepted drones because they were presented as a tool to eradicate proven terrorists with surgical precision. The more I learn, the more I am troubled by the volume of civilian casualties. In my opinion, it is impossible to ethically fight “the war on terror” by engaging in terrorism. Any civilian casualty is an act of terrorism by the U.S. If the U.S. claims that civilian casualties are acceptable in the pursuit of terrorists, then the next time there are American hostages taken, it would make sense to drone strike the whole location to make sure the terrorists are taken out. Oh wait, that wouldn’t happen because the lives of U.S. citizens are more sacred than the lives of foreigners. As an advocate of all humanity, I fundamentally disagree with that ideology. The lives of innocent civilians worldwide are just as important as American lives. Even from a strategic standpoint, the hostility that results from the deaths of innocent civilians is a crucial factor in radicalization leading to terrorism. In other words, a sloppy war on terrorism only generates more terrorists. I was happy to see what Tom Brokaw had to say about the issue. Check it out!

A Cronkite Moment for the Blowback Era

By David Sirota

“The stuff we have done overseas is now brought back into our own front yards. America’s chickens are coming home to roost.” — Reverend Jeremiah Wright

In 2008, the hysterical backlash to the above comment by Barack Obama’s minister became a high-profile example of one of the most insidious rules in American politics: You are not allowed to honestly discuss the Central Intelligence Agency’s concept of “blowback” without putting yourself at risk of being deemed a traitor to country.

Now, five years later, with America having killed thousands of Muslim civilians in its drone strikes and wars, that rule is thankfully being challenged — and not by someone who is so easily smeared. Instead, the apostate is one of this epoch’s most revered journalists — and because of that, we will see whether this country is mature enough to face one of its biggest national security quandaries.

This is the news from Tom Brokaw’s appearance on “Meet the Press” last Sunday. Discussing revelations that the bombing suspects may be connected to Muslim fundamentalism, he said:

“We have got to look at the roots of all of this because it exists across the whole (Asian) subcontinent and the Islamic world around the world. I think we also have to examine (America’s) use of drones (because) there are a lot of civilians who are innocently killed in a drone attack in Pakistan, in Afghanistan and in Iraq. And I can tell you having spent a lot of time over there, young people will come up to me on the streets and say, ‘We love America, but if you harm one hair on the head of my sister, I will fight you forever.’ And there is this enormous rage against what they see in that part of the world as a presumptuousness of the United States.”

As one of the establishment’s most venerated voices, Brokaw is not prone to radical statements.

But in a nation that often avoids acknowledging its own role in intensifying cycles of violence, it is unfortunately considered radical to do what the NBC News veteran did and mention that our violent attacks abroad increase the chance of retributive attacks at home.

Of course, Brokaw was merely stating the obvious: With America having killed thousands of civilians in its wars, we should be appalled by acts of terrorism — but we shouldn’t be surprised by them. We should know that violence will inevitably come from those like the Boston bombing suspect who, according to the Washington Post, “told interrogators that the American wars in Iraq and Afghanistan motivated him and his brother to carry out the attack.”

Noting this is not to argue that such attacks are justified or that we deserve them. It is only to reiterate what Brokaw alluded to: Namely, that blowback should be expected in this age of Permanent War and that one way to potentially avert such blowback in the future is to try to de-escalate the cycle of violence.

To be sure, from Reverend Wright to Republican presidential candidate Ron Paul, many have made these points before. But they have typically been ignored or lambasted for uttering the truth. Brokaw, though, can’t be so readily dismissed. He is a Walter Cronkite of his age, and, indeed, his declaration recalls Cronkite’s seminal moment 45 years ago.

Back in 1968, opponents of the Vietnam War were being marginalized in much the same way critics of today’s wars now are. But when such a revered voice as Cronkite took to television to declare the conflict an unwinnable “stalemate,” he helped create a tipping point whereby Americans began to reconsider their assumptions.

In similarly making such an assumption-challenging statement, Brokaw has followed in Cronkite’s heroic footsteps. The only question is: Will America finally listen?
